Memorial Day

Memorial day is an american holiday that is celebrated on the last monday of May. This year memorial day will occur at May, 30. Memorial day was originally known as Decoration Day but was later changed to memorial day. Memorial day is a day of remembering those who have died while serving the U.S. There are lots of towns and cities that claim to be the birthplace of memorial day. Waterloo, N.Y is officially considered the birthplace of memorial day. In 1873 New York was the only place to officially recognize memorial day as a holiday but later on in 1890 it was recognized by all the Northern States. A resolution was passed in 2000 which is known as the “National Moment of Remembrance.” This is when all Americans pause what they are doing for 1 minute at 3:00 p.m local time. This was made to honor those that have died fighting in any of the wars that have occurred. Memorial day was first observed in May 30, 1868 to honor those that died in the civil war. Memorial day is celebrated at the Arlington National Cemetery each year with a ceremony that involves placing flags on all the graves. A few ways you can show honor and respect on memorial day are attending parades, decorating your house with flags, thanking a veteran, visiting memorials and visiting cemeteries and placing flowers on graves. On memorial day I will have a moment of silence to honor those who have died fighting in a war.
