Phlebotomist
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Draw blood from patients
  • Take tissue samples
  • Draw bodily fluids
  • Meet a lot of new people on a day-to-day basis
  • Practice proper patient identification
  • Label vials with information such as patient name and date sample was obtained
  • Draw blood using a specific method based on the patient's health
  • Deliver all samples taken to a laboratory
  • Being friendly to patients
  • Maintain work environment safe and healthy
  • Provide assistance if patients have a reaction when blood is drawn
  • Ensure that all equipment is sanitized in order to avoid infections from occurring
  • Avoiding direct contact with blood
  • Be able to handle aggressive patients
  • Must be accurate and careful when drawing blood from a patient
  • Patient counseling to help those who are afraid of needles
Salary: $29,720
Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree and certification. Continuing education is required in order to renew certification
Demand for this career: 25% increase from 2014 to 2024
Reflection: I would not like to become a phlebotomist because they do not make a lot of money and also the job doesn’t sound very interesting to me.
