Phlebotomist
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Draw blood from patients
- Take tissue samples
- Draw bodily fluids
- Meet a lot of new people on a day-to-day basis
- Practice proper patient identification
- Label vials with information such as patient name and date sample was obtained
- Draw blood using a specific method based on the patient's health
- Deliver all samples taken to a laboratory
- Being friendly to patients
- Maintain work environment safe and healthy
- Provide assistance if patients have a reaction when blood is drawn
- Ensure that all equipment is sanitized in order to avoid infections from occurring
- Avoiding direct contact with blood
- Be able to handle aggressive patients
- Must be accurate and careful when drawing blood from a patient
- Patient counseling to help those who are afraid of needles
Salary: $29,720
Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree and certification. Continuing education is required in order to renew certification
Demand for this career: 25% increase from 2014 to 2024
Reflection: I would not like to become a phlebotomist because they do not make a lot of money and also the job doesn’t sound very interesting to me.
