"Presidents Day"
Presidents day is a federal holiday that is observed on the third Monday of February. The origins of presidents day lies in the 1800s. During the 1800s it was the birthday of the first president and was first celebrated as a federal holiday. The purpose of presidents day is to honor the president of the united states and to honor the first president of the united states. It was originally established in 1885. It is officially called "Washington's Birthday" by the federal government. It was traditionally celebrated on February 22 but then was moved to the third Monday after 1971. Several states have individual holidays honoring the birthday's of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and several other presidents. Today, Presidents day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all past and current U.S presidents. Presidents day was moved to Monday because of the Uniform Monday Holiday Holiday Act. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act was made to shift the celebration of several federal holidays to Monday so that workers could have a 3-day weekend. There were some people that argued that holidays should be on the day they are supposed to be on. The act was passed in 1968 and took effect in 1971.
