Follow the spread of Zika in N.J. with our interactive case tracker

On tuesday a baby was born in New Jersey with a birth defect that is caused by the Zika virus. The mother of the baby got the disease while visiting the U.S. The zika virus can be transmitted through mosquitos or be transmitted sexually if the person has the virus in their body, it is also linked to another disease known as microcephaly that causes people to have abnormally small heads and lifelong disabilities. Right now there are 16 confirmed cases of people with Zika. All of the cases of Zika are travel-related.  The New Jersey Advance Media is currently tracking the Zika virus in New Jersey. It is expected that mosquitos that carry zika in New Jersey will arrive around July. Right now there are currently no cures for Zika. If the Zika virus spreads it can affect newborn babies throughout the U.S.
